Like clothes, models too have their season

Maria Borges’ modeling career began in 2010 when she came second in Elite Model Look Angola 2010 and soon signed with Supreme Management in New York. She then made her fashion week debut walking in 17 runways that season . By 2013 Forbes Africa named her the top model of the year.

4 Women in Fashion You Should Look Up.

Their careers shaped the fashion landscape we see today.

  1. Coco Chanel

Today the fashion house is under the care of Karl Lagerfeld, and is considered a marker of wealth and luxury. But it began in 1913 when Coco Chanel had the fabulous idea to create women’s clothing from jersey fabrics (at the time used for men’s underwear). Coco Chanel made women’s clothes that were more sporty and casual (yet chic) and as a result spearheaded the shift from the corseted silhouette.

Valentino’s Spring 2016 Campaign.

“The clothes were inspired by African motifs.” ~McCurry

To me the word inspiration is tied to respect. To be inspired by something is to love that thing so much, your love for it sparks a new creation. When you are inspired, you are awed by your muse, you want to learn more about your muse. Unless of course, your muse is Africa.

In your text, treat Africa as if it were one country. It is hot and dusty with rolling grasslands and huge herds of animals and tall, thin people who are starving. Or it is hot and steamy with very short people who eat primates. Don’t get bogged down with precise descriptions.

Binyavanga Wainaina, How to Write about Africa

Design house Valentino went to Steven McCurry to shoot their Spring 2016 campaign. And went as far as referring to him as a ‘cultural reporter’ perfect for their African excursion.

Guy’s Style Tips: 17 items every modern gentleman’s closet should have

Easy style tips for the fellas

UJANADUME

A dark Suit (that actually fits)
Every man worth his salt MUST have a suit in his closet. For a first suit it is recommended that you go for a dark  suit (black or navy blue) that can easily be used for both formal and informal occasions. Expensive suits are all well and good, but believe me when I tell you that a good fit is THE most important factor to consider when looking for a good suit.
An inexpensive suit will still look good if it’s fitted properly.

Wish List 2

I want so much…

1. Michael Soi Tote Bag

Yes they are trendy, cool and are probably on a recommendation list on a tripadvisor forum. But I really like these bags because, every one of his pieces tells a story, and I think it would be pretty special to be able to own and carry around one of his stories. And as an artist I commend his personalised skill.

What is fashion

A quick look at the technical side of fashion.

When I hear fashion discussed in Kenyan pop culture fashion is often referred to as something superficial. The inconsequential thing ‘stylish’ people do with clothes, runway shows and make up. In addition fashion is exclusive and not for everyone. Which is incorrect; provided you wear clothes (even ugly ones) you are part of the fashion industry.

Now, of course fashion means different things to different people. And everyone takes on a different role. There are people who drive the fashion engine and for the purpose of this article we will refer to them as fashion experts. These experts go beyond the pretty models, PR people and style bloggers that visit your timelines. The contributors to fashion are numerous, but can be categorized by what they contribute to the industry as a whole.

Kenyan Culture in Non-Kenyan Fashion Shows: IPs and Cultural Appropriation.

Note: IP refers to intellectual property.

In 2008 Kikoy UK Ltd attempts to trademark the Kikoi (which would give the company sole commercial rights to the Kikoi in Europe). They fail, thanks to efforts of Kenya Industrial Property Institute. Articles are run on the IP drama, Kikoy UK Ltd continues to profit from the Kikoi. No preventive measures are made to make sure Kenyan culture is no longer at risk.

The S/S2012 Louis Vuitton runway show debuts a ‘hot new trend’, a checked textile pattern featuring red, blue, black and purple hues known as the Maasai Shuka. Louis Vuitton takes ‘homage’ to a new colonial-esque level and patents the Maasai Shuka.

The King

Ivan has done it again! Read the poem he wrote to accompany an art piece I did of the legendary Micheal Jackson. I am awed by the ingenious writing style he’s used.

The King

HIStory speaks of a king
Whose kingdom spread across continents
A king whom thousands would imitate
But for a thousand years would never duplicate

It speaks of a man of many faces
Whose movements were flawless
And whose voice left many speechless
Legend has it he could even perform magic

Millions attest to his ability to walk on the moon
While staying grounded
Recorded footage shows him giving audiences chills
A true showman who could thrill, a Thriller if you will

Many still Remember The Time they shared with him
They speak of him as a lover
They say out of all the beauty in the world
He found love in the eyes of a Liberian Girl

History speaks of a man of peace
Filled with such compassion, he tried to Heal The World
Black Or White, skin color didn’t matter
The world would be better if everyone came together

His Words My Muse: 4 in 1.

The day of the dead girl was the last post of the series that I discussed, to make up for the last couple of weeks I thought I would do a 4 in 1 post .

The poems from the past weeks have a strong romantic theme (with the exception of this week’s post). But the stories Ivan tells are not typical romances, loving and being loved is not always the cut and dry romcom plot line; boy meets girl, they fall in love, conflict & resolution and finally happily ever after. But the people we choose to love (and choose to love us)
